A Wonderous World of Pattern with Water Garden

A cornucopia of vivacious colour

Water Garden is a celebration of newly discovered archive patterns from Sanderson Design Group which have been brought together in a fresh reimagining for 2022. Sanderson have explored late 19th and early 20th century designs to bring this collection together with a range of patterns which revolve around the love of romanticism during this period along with the strong influences of oriental style from Japan, India and China. Water Garden harks back to looks which were adored and so rightly adorned stately homes across the UK during this period.

With thirty-four sumptuously bold fabrics to choose from and thirty wallpapers Water Garden offers a cornucopia of colour and pattern. It’s vivaciously wonderous offering encompasses motifs that include pagodas, peonies, koi carp, bonsai, cranes and frogs and classic chinoiserie. As Rebecca Craig, head of design for Sanderson says, “This collection is all about discovering documents in our archive that lain previously untouched. Whether drawn, printed or painted, we’re celebrating their authentic beauty and the host of eastern cultures that came together to create something so special.”

Romantic Oriental Designs

The Chinese inspired decorative style of the Emperor Peony wallpaper in the Jade and Apricot colourway as shown above for example is a 1920’s Jeffrey & Co. archive design adorned with large peonies and tropical butterflies. A wide width wallpaper, its opaque detail pays homage to the block printed original, elevated even further by the addition of subtle metallic highlights.

Anthos as shown below upholstering a statement chair is an intricately woven decorative jacquard fabric inspired by an Uzbekistani Suzani from the Sanderson archive. The handcrafted feel of the original textile has been beautifully captured in two new colourways.

Pagoda River is a very early design from the Eton Rural collections of the 1910s. The striking red and gold colourway shown on the sofa below is a gorgeous design statement where a pop of colour and excitement is needed. It also comes in a calmer Indigo and Blue option if you’re looking to create a cooler mood colour wise.

China Blue as shown below as curtain fabric takes stylised motifs of flowers and fruit which are beautifully placed on this all-over cotton-linen blend fabric, adapted from a rare French textile sample dating from the 18th Century. Originally block printed, this upholstery fabric has been reproduced in a contemporary inky blue and neutral colourway.
