Take a Magical Journey with the Mustique Collection
Sometimes escapism through design is bliss
A hundred miles west of Barbados, Mustique is an island steeped in history and surrounded by intrigue - favoured as a place for the elite to meet without interruption. It seems only fitting therefore, that the Mustique Collection from Kai Fabrics, with its subtle nod to British Colonial décor has a slight air of mystery entwined into its designs along with imagery that evokes languorous, lush landscapes.
The backbone of this collection is the luxe jacquard velvet Enos fabric, which has been designed to emulate woven cane furniture. Caning, the technique of weaving on a frame using rattan cane first appeared on the seats and backs of chairs in the mid-18th century. It has remained a popular element of furniture design ever since and has even been adopted by Dior as a signature motif. Referred to as their ‘cannage pattern’ by the fashion house it’s been incorporated into prints across fabrics, bags and jewellery since the 1940s.
With seven different colourways Enos is an excellent choice for anyone looking to reupholster a chair or introduce fabrics into a scheme which needs to have a sense of timelessness and innate taste.
The Josiah fabric has such an ethereal lightness to its design that you would be forgiven for having the instant instinct to float away to a serene shoreline. This really is a collection that evokes a wistfulness and wonder - the promise of serenity and calm that we long to bring into our own homes.
Kenelm again is a fabric that brings up thoughts of deserted fantasy islands inhabited by lush, tranquil flora and fauna. The seamless repeat of this fabric gives a sense of peace and quiet, a subtle layering which encourages the eye to travel then relax.
Rhoda is an unashamedly geometric offering, with arches that undulate peacefully in an abstraction of art deco that plays with shape and form. It’s a fabric that that could be dressed up further to feel more formal, or alternatively be combined with the other more diaphanous fabrics to build on a feeling of translucence and grace.
If relaxation is key for the scheme you’re designing, then the Mustique collection should be a serious consideration. From the subtle woven linen print design of Dolly through to the gentle curves of Noah it’s a range that allows you to imagine fabrics breezing past your face as you glide out through sea-swept French doors into your own private paradise. Sometimes escapism through design is bliss.
