Own Your Room with Diane Hill and Harlequin
Hand painted Chinoiserie Designs that celebrate individuality
The resurgence of Chinoiserie inspired fabrics and wallpapers in interiors really is in full swing currently with many people getting fully on board with the fact that this aesthetic offers an unrivalled touch of luxury and glamour. So, it comes as no surprise that a talented designer like Diane Hill would be spotted by the likes of Harlequin to collaborate on a collection across fabrics and wallpapers that celebrates the beauty of this movement
As Claire Greenfield, lead designer for Harlequin puts it, “Working with Diane’s unique and colourful hand was hugely exciting. Her artwork really captures the spirit of individuality, introducing a modern take to traditional chinoiserie influences. Owning the room with beautifully painted motifs, Diane encourages homeowners to bring out their personality, by creating a look that represents who they are.”
Diane herself has been absolutely overjoyed to share her design passions with the rest of the world explaining that; “Chinoiserie is such a beautiful, elevated art form and something I’ve wanted to make more accessible for such a long time. Harlequin has given me the independence to create a range of wallpapers and fabrics that brings out everything that’s been locked inside of me. It’s like an extension of who I am. This opportunity feels very vibrant and uplifting - it’s challenging the limits in terms of colour and style. It’s like creating chinoiserie in a way that’s never been seen before.”
As part of the ‘Own the Room’ series by Harlequin they have stated how this collection opens the previously unattainable world of silk art. As they say themselves; “This is a real treat for the eyes, gouache paint and cut traditional brushes enable fine and intricate detail, which has been carefully translated for digital production.”
It’s also a collection that feels utterly modern and correct for any contemporary home. As the ‘Marsha’ Fabric adorning a statement bed shows above with its gorgeous explosion of peonies and poppies these are sumptuous design done with a bold and expressive eye. When combined with the ‘Isabella’ wallpaper - a simple bamboo pattern with painterly strokes which feel natural and luscious the overall effect is a feeling of fluidity and elegance.
‘Florence’ is a wallpaper which has been designed to evoke the feeling of a summer’s day. Taking ancient hand painted silk chinoiserie wallpapers as its inspiration, Diane has hand painted this design onto silk using traditional techniques with watercolours which is then faithfully recreated digitally to retain the vivid pops of green and teal and attention to detail she has laboured over. ‘Lady Alford’ shown below as an accompanying window treatment also features bamboo stems in its design which are paired against delicate anemone blooms. The perfect upholstery fabric for a sofa in this scheme is found in ‘Lovelace’ – a simple oversized woven rattan design available in three striking, bright colours.
If you have a passion for botanicals and paintings which faithfully replicate fruit and florals then ‘Marie’ which is available in both fabric and wallpaper offers a delicate and fresh design featuring pears and blossoms that trail across vines in a palette which evokes bright, sunshine filled days. As featured below it works perfectly in a coordinated approach across upholstery and walls and also benefits again from the introduction of ‘Lovelace’ as a pop of vibrant yellow on a footstool. So, if you feel inspired to own your room with Diane Hill and Harlequin why not get in touch and find out how this collection could work for your interiors?
